4 Common Questions in CAT-4 Exams
CAT4 exams test your ability to reason in four different ways: spatially, quantitively, verbally, and non-verbally.
Reasoning, in all these areas, is often about noticing.
For instance, in a non-verbal question, you might notice that a set of shapes are all symmetrical. Reasoning your way to the answer is then fairly straightforward. Whenever you get a difficult CAT4 question wrong, ask yourself, what did I fail to notice? Whatever it is, it will help you solve lots of other questions too. Make sure you notice it next time!
To get you started, here are four of the most common CAT4 questions – and what you need to notice to solve them.
1. Non-Verbal Reasoning- Figure Classification
Figure classification questions ask you to look at a series of shapes and discern a characteristic which connects all of them. You must pick another shape with this same characteristic to add to the series.
A H I M V
a B b P c R d X e L
What to notice: The five shapes in the series are all symmetrical.
The answer: d.
Tips:
- Symmetry is one of the most common characteristics that sets apart shapes. It should be one of the first characteristics you check for when answering non-verbal questions.
- The characteristic you need to notice to solve a question like this should be:
- a) true of every shape in the series
- b) only true of one shape out of your possible answer choices.
- Non-verbal questions often use letter shapes, but don’t be fooled- the alphabet will not be important here.
2. Verbal Reasoning- Verbal Classification
Verbal Classification questions are similar to Figure Classification questions. You are shown a set of words which are grouped by a shared characteristic. Your job is to select the answer choice which has the same characteristic and could therefore be another member of that set.
