GCSE Year 11 English Language Course
Target Grade: Grades 7–9

Course Overview
         Students will cover writing for the purposes of higher mark creative writing and non-fiction/transactional writing exam questions across AQA, WJEC and Edexcel boards. They will also cover linguistic analysis for the purposes of both short and longer format questions on the English Language exams – again, both fictional and non-fiction texts.
Course Structure
- Start Date: 2nd October (Thursdays, 7–8 pm) or Saturdays, 2–3 pm.
- Class Size: no more than 9, average less than 5 students.
- Duration: 1 hour per week until February; can extend to 1.5–2 hours per week before the exam month.
- Target Scores: Currently at Grade 6+, aiming for Grades 7–9.

Homework:
Respond to this prompt through a ten-minute planning session; Write the opening scene of a story titled, ‘Strangers on a Train’.

Using the provided climactic moment, write a two paragraph problem or complication that leads up the event.

Objectives:
Explore and understand how choreography of action is used to build and release rising action and tension – focus on prepositional phrases and fronted adverbials.
Homework:
Using the short prompts provided, choreograph a complex action scene using prepositional phrases and fronted adverbial phrases.

Endings and Resolutions
Objectives:
Introduction to the five main ways to end a scene and how to choose quickly.
Homework:
Write five different ending for your scene.

Objectives:
Exploring the way to proofread for better punctuation, sentence and paragraphing use.
Homework:
Using the provided exemplar of a scene, work to improve its uses of punctuation, sentence types and paragraphs.

Imagery and Vocabulary Choice: levelling up choices of figurative language and other methods.
Objectives:
Explore how to create sensory imagery through figurative language.
Homework:
Use the image provided to create a multi-layered, multi-sensory description of a setting.
